July 28, 2003 News PEG: Chicago Soccer Team Wins National Championship Title Press Release: The Chicago MAGIC boys under-17 soccer team won the National Championship title Sunday in Germantown, Maryland. Germantown hosted the US Youth Soccer National Championship for boys and girls age groups U-14 through U-19. The top 4 teams in the nation battled to be crowned National Champion in each age group. The MAGIC is made up of elite players from the Chicago Metro area including: Aurora, Downers Grove, Elgin, Evanston, Frankfort, Hinsdale, Naperville, Orland Park, Western Springs and Peoria. The MAGIC earned the trip to compete in the National Championships as a result of victories through a series of tournaments starting with the State Championship. The MAGIC won the Illinois State Champion title in June for the 4th time in 5 years. As State Champion, the MAGIC represented Illinois in the Region II Championships held in Des Moines, Iowa. A total of 16 midwest states form Region II. The MAGIC defeated Ohio South, South Dakota, and Indiana in pool play. Missouri was next to fall to the MAGIC in the semi-finals. The MAGIC defeated the Michigan Wolves in sudden death overtime in the Regional championship match. With the Region II Championship title in-hand, the MAGIC traveled to Germantown with high expectations as one of the top four teams in the nation. The MAGIC started the tournament with a disappointing 0-4 loss to the Region IV Champions (Sereno Eagles from Phoenix, AZ). The MAGIC rallied to win the next two games convincingly against the defending national champions Concorde Fire (Atlanta, GA) representing Region III by a score of 4-1, and the Baltimore Bays (Baltimore, MD) representing Region I by a score of 4-0. The Championship game matched the MAGIC against Region IV (Sereno) and provided the MAGIC an opportunity to redeem the loss earlier in the week. The MAGIC struck quickly in the first half with goals from Jack Smithson in the 17th minute followed by Drew DeGurian in the 40th minute. This lead held as the MAGIC recorded the shutout victory 2-0. The MAGIC were selected to receive the “Fair Play” award, issued to a team in each age group displaying the best sportsmanship during the tournament. Goalkeeper Chay Cain also received the “Golden Glove” award for outstanding play in the goal. Outstanding and consistent play by the entire squad proved to be the key to the MAGIC’s success. Lyle Ward, Region II Boys ODP Administrator will be head of delegation and assisted by team trainer/administrator David Ball of Oklahoma. The ’88 Boys will play three international friendly games before competing in the 21° Torneo Internazionale dell’Amicizia 2003 (Biella International Tournament) to be played April 20-21 in Biella, Italy. The Biella International Tournament will consist of 10 teams divided into two groups. The Region II US Youth Soccer ODP ’88 Boys will compete in Group A against Göteborg (Sweden), Tourcoing (France), Internazionale, and Biellese (both Italy). All four round-robin preliminary games will be played Sunday, April 20, and will consist of a single 30-minute period. Semi-finals and finals will be played on Monday, April 21. In 2002, the US Youth Soccer ODP ’87 Boys team from Region II won this competition. Minnesota Youth Soccer Association director of Coaching, Ian Barker, will serve as head of delegation assisted by team administrator Jerry Ku of Michigan State Youth Soccer Association. Region II US Youth Soccer ODP Staff Coaches John Hannan and Pete Kapsalis will serve as the team’s head coach and assistant coach, respectively Along with the invaluable experience US Youth Soccer ODP players gain by participating in international tournaments against some of the best youth competition in the world, tours such as these also provide opportunities to see and learn about the world and historical monuments, such as the Roman Colosseum. “I’ve always required the players to write reports prior to travel. Many are able to receive high school credit, (and) I’ve also watched the boys know in advance which particular pieces of artwork are in a specific gallery prior to arrival,” Ward said. “I know it increases their appreciation of the experience and the culture to which we are exposing them.” US Youth Soccer ODP is the original ODP program. US Youth Soccer ODP is the only elite player development program that can claim members of Major League Soccer and Women’s United Soccer Association, as well as a majority of current and past national and youth team members, as alumni.
