Quarter IV - 2001

01/01/02: Magic to announce formation of new initiative with Magic/Sockers Academy Program beginning this January of 2002

1/1/02:  Coach Matkovich will be in Las Vegas from Jan 2, 2002 through Jan 10, 2002.  He will be providing instruction and training to coaches from across the country at the U.S. Soccer National Coaching Schools.

12/30/01:  Ned Grabavoy (Indiana University) will be attending a USSF National Camp for the U-20 Men's Team which moves on to Brazil from January 2nd through January 14th for a series of international friendly matches.

New Session II begins at SportsClub on Friday, January 12th.

12/23/01:  Chicago Magic Soccer Club supports the MorningStar Mission ministries of Joliet with Christmas gifts for children - Link

12/20/01: Chicago Magic seniors are beginning to give oral commitments to colleges. Kevin Marzalek (Orland Park) to Western Illinois; Adam Hage (Bloomington) to Bradley University; Kevin Earnest (Lockport) to Northwestern.

12/19/01: Coach Hannan heads to London for ten days of soccer matches and training sessions

12/18/01: Magic to take four teams (U-08; U-10, & U-12 boy plus the u-10 girls)  to Mayor Daley Winter Soccer Festival at McCormick Place next week. Coach Fonfara will coach all the teams during the Dec. 28, 29, & 30th sessions.

12/17/01: Chicago Magic adds sixth full-time coach with the former Southwest Missouri State University assistant coach Jeremy Alumbaugh who starts on January 2nd, 2002.

12/16/01: Ned Grabavoy and Mike Bock lead Indiana University to the Finals of the NCAA Division I playoffs, but lose to North Carolina 2-0 in the final college match of the season.


12/09/01: Five former Chicago Magic players lead their teams to the Final Four of the NCAA – Division I Championships in Columbus, Ohio next weekend. Indiana (with Ned Grabavoy and Mike Bock) will meet St. Johns (with Matt Groenwald), while Stanford (with Derek Shanahan and Johannes Maliza) meet Univ. of North Carolina this coming Friday in the semi-finals.

Magic U-17s will play in the NCAA College Showcase in Columbus this coming weekend.

12/09/01: Great turn-out for the 5th Annual Joint Sockers-Magic College Showcase in Palatine (at Soccer Enterprises) with more than 30 local college coaches after seeing 150 boys and girls players from both organizations.

12/03/01: Former Magic players spot the Final Eight teams in the NCAA Division I Tournament. In fact a number of Magic stars square off in the Indiana – vs.- Clemson quarterfinal match next Sunday in Bloomington, IN. Ned Grabavoy and Mike Bock (for Indiana) will meet Chase Hilgenbrink and Doug Warren (for Clemson).

Former Magic stars Johannes Maliza and Derek Shanahan will star for Stanford in another quarterfinal match.

12/01/01: New Magic web-site expected to be on-line around Jan 1, 2002.  Preview the look and feel at the following link for the new and improved web-site.  The Pop-up ads will disappear with the real implementation of the new site.

11/26/01: Magic to sponsor indoor tourney (boys & girls) at SportsClub on Feb. 1, 2 & 3, 2002. Registration information ---- see tournaments

11/24/01: Matkovich at US Regional sessions at Cocoa Beach, FL with Region II – 1985s

11/22/01: Chicago Magic is strongly considering sanctioning affiliation for all 2002 Magic tournaments with new National Association of Competitive Soccer Clubs (NACSC)

11/21/01: TV-video for 2001 Kohls’ Best of the Midwest Tournaments is ready and will be aired locally in the Chicagoland area throughout December on AT&T Broadband Sports. Individual copies of the 50-minute program will be available in VHS copies and CD formats. Watch here for additional information.

11/19/01: Coaches Matkovich and Hannan agree to field four (4) Y-League teams this coming Spring in the USL Youth League.

11/18/01: Matkovich is ready to add sixth and seventh full-time staff coaches after 1st of the new year.

11/15/01: Magic’s Joe Ducci (Lincoln-Way Central HS) is named top prep player in the State of Illinois by the IHSSCA for 2001 season.  For the fifth consecutive year a Chicago Magic player is named as the top player in Illinois.

11/07/01:  CMSC Practice Calendars for Nov/Dec are here -see schedules

11/04/01: Congratulations to Sandburg HS of Orland Park and all the Chicago Magic players who helped to bring the first IHSA AA State Title to the south suburbs in the last eight years.

10/31/01: #1 ranked Sandburg HS and #3 ranked Lincoln-Way Central HS both qualify for the IHSA Elite Eight in the AA Postseason Tournament and state finals at North Central College in Naperville. Good luck to all our Chicago Magic teammates who represent these two schools.

10/30/01: High school-aged teams have tryouts this week. Call Coach Scott Fonfara for times and dates.

10/25/01: Kohl’s Best of the Midwest Special Tournament TV Video is scheduled to be ready for release on Monday, November 11th. Look for more details and order forms during the next two weeks.
